Lot 445WW2 American Battle Damaged M1 Steel Combat Helmet with Insignia of the 29th Infantry Division, Who Were Instrumental in the D-Day Landings, Landing at Omaha Beach on 6th June 1944

WW2 American Battle Damaged M1 Steel Combat Helmet with Insignia of the 29th Infantry Division, Who Were Instrumental in the D-Day Landings, Landing at Omaha Beach on 6th June 1944
WW2 American Battle Damaged M1 Steel Combat Helmet with Insignia of the 29th Infantry Division, Who Were Instrumental in the D-Day Landings, Landing at Omaha Beach on 6th June 1944, superb time capsule helmet, being a early fixed bale M1 helmet with its original small painted 29th Infantry division emblem to the centre of the helmet. Rough textured combat paint finish to the shell. Top of the shell has a bullet entry and exit hole. Shell is complete with partial webbing chinstrap, one side worn away and incomplete. Helmet is complete with the fibre liner which has the results of the bullet strike with large hole and damage to the lining, however not enough to indicate that this helmet’s original owner became a casualty, quite possibly kept as a lucky escape souvenir by the original owner. Overall a super example of a ‘been there and done it’ combat helmet. The 29th Infantry division was part of the 116th Infantry and was to support the American 1st division on the western flank. Troops from the 29th division landed on Omaha beach, which historians have agreed was the hardest beach head to take of all the landing beaches as the German defences were strongest. Due to the weather conditions, they were thrown of course but were the first allied soldiers to land on the beaches of Normandy at 0630 hours on 6th June 1944. We can not say for sure that this helmet was damaged during the Normandy landings as the division continued to serve after the invasion. Categories: Headdress
