British 1914 Star & Bar Medal Trio 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, Took Part in the Rear Guard Action at Etreaux and Later Killed in Action December 1914
British 1914 Star & Bar Medal Trio 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, Took Part in the Rear Guard Action at Etreaux and Later Killed in Action December 1914, 1914 star with 5th August – 22nd November 1914 “Mons” bar awarded to “8663 PTE M HALES R MUNS: FUS”, British War and Victory medals “8663 A SJT H W HALES R MUN FUS”. Medals are complete with the original ribbons. Harry William Hales was from Croydon, Surrey, he enlisted in Stratford, Essex and served with the 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. He embarked for France on 13th August 1914 and landed at La Harve on 14th August. The 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers fought a heroic rear guard action at Etreaux in August 1914, suffering heavy casualties. It would appear that Hales survived this but was killed in action on 21st December 1914. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial Panel 43 & 44. His mother applied for his 1914 star on 16th January 1919, possibly why the initial is incorrect on the star. Categories: Medals
