Lot 396Historically Interesting Silver Goblet Presented to General Feldmarschall Kesselring in Commemoration of the 100th Aircraft Shot Down by the Luftwaffe 1st Night Fighter Squadron (Nachtjagdgeschwader 1)

Historically Interesting Silver Goblet Presented to General Feldmarschall Kesselring in Commemoration of the 100th Aircraft Shot Down by the Luftwaffe 1st Night Fighter Squadron (Nachtjagdgeschwader 1)
Historically Interesting Silver Goblet Presented to General Feldmarschall Kesselring in Commemoration of the 100th Aircraft Shot Down by the Luftwaffe 1st Night Fighter Squadron (Nachtjagdgeschwader 1), the hammered finish silver goblet with flared rim, has finely engraved squadron badge and commanders pennant to the centre, the squadron badge being a diving eagle and lightning bolt pointing / attacking the British isles. Reverse side is engraved in the same style a “100” within a wreath. To the bottom of the goblet are German silver marks. (Nachtjagdgeschwader 1) was the most successful Night Fighter squadron of the German Luftwaffe, they inflicted heavy casualties on the allied air forces, claiming an estimated 2,311 victories from formation in June 1940 up until the end of the war in 1945. This goblet was presented by the squadron to General Feldmarschall Albert Kesselring. During World War II he commanded air forces in the invasions of Poland, France, the Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa. As Wehrmacht Commander-in-Chief South, he was the overall German commander in the Mediterranean theatre, which included the operations in North Africa. Kesselring conducted a defensive campaign against the Allied forces in Italy until he was injured in an accident in October 1944. We believe that the 100 victories by the squadron was achieved whilst serving in the Mediterranean theatre. In his final campaign of the war, he commanded German forces on the Western Front. He won the respect of his Allied opponents for his military accomplishments, but his record also included massacres committed on his orders in Italy. At the Nuremberg War Trials he was convicted of war crimes for his involvement in the massacre of civilians in Italy, originally sentenced to death, this was changed to life imprisonment, he was eventually released in 1952. Kesselring was one of the few holders of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oakleaves Swords and Diamonds. This goblet was part of his estate which was sold at auction by the Kesselring family.
