Lot 114An original Teddy puppet from BBC Children’s television show ‘Andy Pandy’, by Chad Valley early 1950s,

An original Teddy puppet from BBC Children’s television show ‘Andy Pandy’, by Chad Valley early 1950s,
An original Teddy puppet from BBC Children’s television show ‘Andy Pandy’, by Chad Valley early 1950s, fine quality tan mohair bear with orange glass eyes, vertically stitched nose with top stitch and stitched mouth, with specially built metal hoops to shoulders, hips and neck for string attachment, wearing a white and red polka-dot bow tie, HMS sailor hat and brown rucksack, (condition: generally excellent), 9” (23cm) tall, also with a Della Porta’s Ltd paper bag containing red and green polka-dot ribbons. Together with card box with pencil ‘ANDY PANDY’ TEDDY and pen LiTTLE ‘TED’ BBC. T.V to lid, felt tip ‘ANDY PANDY’S TEDDY.!. TO LID EDGE, back of box address to Miss Vida F Baxter, 139 Union Street Aberdeen, Scotland and Sender. M.Bird, Chartwell Cottage, Westerham, Kent, stamps and frank mark for Westerham. It is believed that this is the first Teddy made for the Listen with Mother Andy Pandy television series created by Frieda Angstrom and Maria Bird who formed Westerham Arts Ltd, named after the village where they lived in Kent, also home to the craftsman who originally sculpted their Andy Pandy puppet. Unlike Little Ted auctioned at Bonhams in 2009 and the example at the Museum of London this Teddy is not weighted something that helped the puppeteers operate the later examples, thus we believe this is the first of the three made for the television series. The Sailors hat and rucksack where probably used in the episode ‘Boats’ aired on the 26th September 1950. Categories: Teddy Bears and Soft toys
