Great War 30th Battalion Machine Gun Corps Military Medal Group of Three, Awarded for Gallantry During The Actions Around Englefontaine in October / November 1918
Great War 30th Battalion Machine Gun Corps Military Medal Group of Three, Awarded for Gallantry During The Actions Around Englefontaine in October / November 1918, group consists of George V Military Medal (M.M) “36991 SJT H WHITLOCK 33/M.G.C”, British War and Victory medals “36991 SJT H WHITLOCK M.G.C”. Accompanied by a brass Machine Gun Corps cap badge with brooch pin fitting to the reverse. The Military Medal appeared in the London Gazette on 23rd July 1919. He is listed as being from Brampton. In late October to November 1918 the 33rd Battalion Machine Gun Corps took part in operations at the Selle River and the eventual taking of the village of Englefontaine. The battalion history states, “During the action casualties in horses and mules exceeded eighty in number, and the drivers suffered heavily also; but the rapidity of the advance could not have been achieved had it not been for the admirable handling of the transport, particularly by Sergeant McGill of D company and Sergeant Whitlock of C company, and its excellent organisation under the transport officer.” A letter of congratulations from the officer commanding 33rd division states, “Please convey to all ranks under your command my congratulations on the gallantry and endurance they have shown during the hard fighting. They may well be proud of the advance from Malincourt to the River Selle, where all resistance was overcome until the final objective was gained, and the assault and capture of Englefontaine, with 500 prisoners after fifty-six hours of continuous heavy fighting and hard marching over most difficult country, was a magnificent piece of work well organised and most gallantly carried out.” Categories:
