Lot 72Framed Display of Battlefield Relics Recovered from Rorkes Drift

Framed Display of Battlefield Relics Recovered from Rorkes Drift

Framed Display of Battlefield Relics Recovered from Rorkes Drift, the relics which include cartridge cases, bullet heads, brass buckle fitting, ration tin lid etc, have been professionally mounted in a glazed display frame along with 7x coloured front of house film stills from the motion picture “Zulu”, image of Sir Michael Caine as Lieutenant Bromhead and ink signature of Sir Michael Caine. These relics were all gifted to Mick Woodfield by fellow collectors who visited the battle field at the time when there was still an abundance of relics to be found in the area and they could be removed, something that is no longer permitted. The frame measures 89 x 113cms. The defence of the mission station at Rorkes Drift on 22nd – 23rd January 1879 was one of the most historic and recognised actions in British Military history. The garrison which were hugely out numbered managed to withhold the Zulu armies who were full of confidence after the earlier victory over the British forces at Isandlwana. 11 Victoria Cross awards were given to defenders of Rorkes Drift. The actions were also made famous by the 1964 film, “Zulu” starring Sir Stanley Baker and Sir Michael Caine.
