Victorian Indian General Service Medal to the Royal West Kent Regiment for the Operations on the Punjab Frontier as Part of the Malakand Field Force, India General Service Medal 1895-1902 with clasp Punjab Frontier 1897-98, engraved naming, “3632 PTE F THORNTON 1ST BTN RYL W KENT REGT”. Accompanied by an un-associated 1884 dated Khedive’s Star, missing suspension bar, unnamed as issued. Born in Westminster, London, 20-year-old Frederick Thornton attested for service in the Royal West Kent Regiment at Maidstone on 19th November 1892. His service record confirms service with the Malakand Field Force on the Punjab Frontier in 1897. On 24th November 1899 he was tried by District Court Martial for ‘feigning disease’ and being found guilty he was sentenced to 84 days imprisonment with hard labour. He returned to duty on 16th February 1900 and was discharged on 18th November 1904 having completed 12 years of service. Medal and clasp are confirmed on the roll for the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment. This appears to be his only medal entitlement. Categories: Medals
