Distinguished Flying Cross, London Gazette 18th August 1944 - The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards: —Joseph Thomas George WEAVER (170461), R.A.F.V.R., 625 Sqn. The recommendation for this award states – ‘This officer has just completed his first tour of operations as an air gunner. He has completed 29 sorties comprising 201 hours operational flying. As rear gunner he has participated in no less than 14 attacks on Berlin, and attacks on Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Nuremburg, Cologne and other heavily defended targets in Germany. His aircraft has been engaged in combat with enemy night fighter on four occasions, but in common with other occasions when enemy fighters have been encountered in large numbers his untiring vigilance and excellent instructions to his captain for combat manoeuvres have beaten off all attacks. This officer has shown the very best qualities of skill and courage during this period of operational flying, and I strongly recommend him for the award of D.F.C.’ Born in Montgomery, Wales, 18-year-old Joseph Weaver enlisted int the RAF at Shrewsbury in 1939. He completed his training at Shawbury Training Camp. During the Second World War he served with 625 and 550 squadrons flying a total of 56 missions. After the war he continued to serve in the RAF until his retirement as a Flight Lieutenant on 31st August 1961 (London Gazette 3rd October 1961). Joseph Weaver died in Pontefract on 13th November 1982. Categories: Medals
