Second World War Birmingham Blitz Home Guard George Medal Awarded for Gallantry in Rescuing People Trapped Beneath the Wreckage of an A.R.P. Depot at Tysely, Birmingham
Second World War Birmingham Blitz Home Guard George Medal Awarded for Gallantry in Rescuing People Trapped Beneath the Wreckage of an A.R.P. Depot at Tysely, Birmingham, George medal, GVI, 2nd type, engraved in upright capitals “PLTN. CDR.THOMAS M. SIMPSON, HOME GUARD”, medal in red titled fitted case of issue. With some research. London Gazette 27th May 1941 - The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the George Medal, for conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner, to the undermentioned: — Platoon Commander Thomas Simpson, Home Guard. The recommendation for this award states “On the night of 11th December 1940 Platoon Commander Simpson actively assisted in rescuing several persons who were trapped beneath debris when an A.R.P. depot was hit. He had to crawl through debris with men supporting props and there was great danger of other parts of the building collapsing on him. He managed to saw through steel pipes and removed debris which was lying across trapped persons. He showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.” Thomas Simpson was serving with the 6th Birmingham (Factories) Battalion (later 26th Warwickshire (Birmingham) Battalion ) Home Guard at the time of his award. The raid on Birmingham on the 11th December 1940 was the longest raid experienced by the city with some 200 enemy bombers pounding the city for 13 hours killing 263 people and badly injuring a further 243 others. The investiture took place at Buckingham Palace on 10th March 1942. A total of 13 George medals were awarded to member of the Home Guard for gallantry during the Second World War, 10 of these were for air raids. Included with the accompanying research is an email from the Central Chancery of Orders and Knighthood confirming that a replacement medal was issued in 1962 as the original medal was lost during a house move whilst the recipient was in hospital. The fact that this is a second type GVI medal would suggest that this is the replacement medal. Categories: Medals
