Historically Important Hand Written Accounts of US Marine Wallace Patrick Hitchcock, Awarded the Bronze Star and Wrote a Book About His Experiences as a Prisoner of War of the Japanese in WW2, Sergeant Hitchcock served with the 4th Marines during WW2. He was taken prisoner after the fall of Corregidor in the Philippines. The diary begins in June 1942, his diary describes his day to day life. It would appear he was a cook and was assigned to camp kitchens. The diary gives an interesting insight into his life as a prisoner of war. It is interesting to note how the neatness of his handwriting starts to get worse as the time in captivity increases. The diaries are over two books and they end on 4th July 1944. After the war, with the help of these personal diaries, Wallace Hitchcock authored the book ‘Forty Months in Hell’, which details his war and his time in captivity. Many of the entries in these original diaries are mentioned in this book. Other items in the grouping include a small Japanese flag which he brought home as a souvenir, engraved mess tin and an engraved water canteen. Also with the group is photographs from his funeral, when he was buried with full military honors by the US Marine Corps.
