WW1 British Foreign Service Tunic of Brigadier General Sir Philip Charles Palin KCMG CB Commander of the 14th Sikhs at Gallipoli and Later Commanded Troops in Palestine, Post WW1 Investigated the Arab-Jewish Conflict in Jerusalem, fine lightweight khaki tropical cloth four pocket service dress tunic having typical WW1 style large lower pockets. Bullion embroidered gorget collar patches, gilt generals tunic buttons to the front and pockets. Shoulder straps with metal rank insignia. Evidence of a long medal ribbon bar once being pinned to the tunic. Under the breast pocket is a Calcutta tailors label which has faded ink name details, “Brig’d General P C Palin CB” and 1915 date. Tunic is not lined to the interior. Generally good condition. Brigadier General Palin was born in Edinburgh in 1864. He was educated at Clifton College. He entered the British army via the Militia and was not educated at Sandhurst Military College like many other officers. He was commissioned into the Cheshire regiment in 1886. He served with the Cheshire regiment in the final stages of the Third Anglo-Burmese war before joining the Indian Staff Corps. He served in various conflicts in India and the North West Frontier with various Indian Army regiments. He rose steadily through the officer ranks. By the outbreak of WW1, he was in command of the 14th Sikhs. The regiment was part of the 29th Indian Brigade. The regiment was sent to Egypt, where they defeated the Turkish assault on the Suez Canal in February 1915. The brigade was then sent to Gallipoli in April 1915. Palin’s brigade landed on Cape Helles on the Gallipoli peninsula, he led his regiment in the second and third battles of Krithia. The regiment continued to be heavily involved in combat missions during the Gallipoli campaign and sustained heavy casualties. By the time they were withdrawn from Gallipoli they had lost 264 killed and 840 wounded. Palin continued to raise through the ranks and continued his war service in Egypt and Palestine. By the end of WW1 he was in command of the 75th division, they were tasked with salvage work and road repair until the armistice with Turkey was signed. After the dissolvement of 75th Division, Palin remained in Palestine as commander of the 3rd Lahore Division, Indian Army. He was asked to chair and write a report on the Jerusalem riots, which although never published, criticised both sides for the violence in Palestine. Palin retired from the army in 1921. He died on 22nd January 1937 in Hove, Sussex. Categories: Uniforms
