An Interesting First World War Trio of Medals to the 7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry For a Private Who was Wounded and Taken Prisoner of War in May 1915, Returned to the UK in September 1917, Was Discharged and Died at Home 5 days Before the End of the War, 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals, 7-1778 PTE. W. MITCHELL DURH. L.I. William Mitchell from Hendon, Sunderland enlisted into the 7th Durham Light Infantry on 23rd April 1913. He served in France from 19th April 1915 and was reported missing on 30th May 1915. Confirmed as a Prisoner of War and suffering from G.S.W. to the leg resulting in compound fractures of the lower left leg, he was imprisoned in Res. Lag.VII Koln. Between April and September 1917, he was in Switzerland but seems to have upset his hosts at one point as he was imprisoned for 3 days by the Swiss Military Authorities for insubordination. Returned to the UK, he was discharged due to his wounds on 3rd January 1918, he died on 6th November 1918 and is buried in Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery with a War Graves Commission headstone Categories: Medals
